Data canvas is part of Adjust’s product suite. With Data Canvas users can manage their Adjust generated data and easily convert it into visual insights all in one place, without handling multiple platforms and .csv files!
While granular data for detailed analysis is the basic foundation of any data analysis, a visual overview of the most relevant insights makes it easier to communicate data-based decisions.
Users deal with a large number of different data and analytic tools daily to be on top of their data, this context switching makes their work harder, and prone to errors.

From user research, we have learned that 26% of participants rely on tools other than the Adjust main dashboard (table format) or their own BI system.
While some user archetypes are used to the complexity that customizable dashboard builders have, we also had to take into account less experienced users and offer them contextual guidance.
Defining user archetypes and jobs-to-be-done
Defining a high-level user flow allowed us to design the application structure. Data canvas consisted of key user tasks that were later converted into dedicated views:
While working on this feature I had to take into account not different levels of user expertise, but also the different moments of their journey through the dashboard builder.
Errors states, data cleared, first-time-use, dependencies between data sets and widgets, different admin profiles... these were some of them.
At a micro-level, I had to define the interaction patterns that best suited all the small tasks and actions the user could do in the application. Things like dragging and dropping, filtering, sorting, etc.
Along the way, usability tests and user interviews were conducted in conjunction with continuous user behavior tracking (Pendo).
Even though this tool has been welcomed and adopted by some Adjust clients, the great flexibility and customization were not ideal for all users, and this project ended up being discontinued.
Users that don’t own an internal BI system enjoyed it particularly, and it was specially popular in the Japanese market.
This project was a great testing ground for the newly created Design system: Atlas.
This project was also great for gathering insights into how Adjust users manage and understand their data.
We were able to determine the following:
These insights collected from Data Canvas became an excellent foundation for the next and biggest Adjust’s Data visualization project: Datascape.
